Why convert WAV to MP3?

WAV is a PCM audio format that stores every sample uncompressed, which is why a four-minute stereo CD-quality bounce is roughly 40MB. That size is correct for a DAW, a mastering session, or an archive. It is the wrong size for a phone, a car USB stick, or an attachment limit. MP3 exists to throw away the parts of the spectrum most listeners will not miss so the same four minutes land near 5.5MB at 192kbps.

The usual sources are exports from Audacity, Reaper, Logic, GarageBand, Windows Sound Recorder, and some field recorders. Voice notes that left the recorder as WAV fill a pocket faster than you expect. Converting is not about changing how the session was mixed. It is about making a listening copy that actually travels.

This is a one-way trip. MP3 cannot reconstruct the original PCM. If the WAV is a master, keep it. Burn the MP3 as a derivative for playback, podcast RSS, or WhatsApp. People who convert the master and then delete the WAV find this out the first time they need to remaster.

How much smaller is an MP3 than a WAV?

A 16-bit, 44.1 kHz, stereo WAV uses about 10MB per minute. A 192kbps MP3 uses about 1.4MB per minute. That is roughly a 7× shrink, not a rounding error. 128kbps speech lands near 1MB per minute. 320kbps music lands near 2.4MB per minute and is still far smaller than the WAV.

The shrink is not free. MP3 discards frequency data. On voice, 128kbps is usually indistinguishable from the WAV in a quiet room. On dense music, 192kbps is the point where most people stop caring on consumer headphones. 320kbps is insurance, not magic.

If the WAV is 24-bit or 96 kHz, the MP3 will still be 16-bit-ish perceptual audio at your chosen bitrate. You do not get a 24-bit MP3. You get a smaller listening file. Keep the high-resolution WAV if that depth was the reason you bounced it.

Should you keep the original WAV?

Yes, if it is a mix, a podcast master, or anything you might edit again. MP3 is a distribution format. WAV is a working format. Deleting the WAV after a successful convert is how archives get stuck with a smeared 192kbps copy of a session you can no longer open cleanly.

If the WAV itself was already dumped from an MP3, converting again does more harm than good. You cannot un-compress a lossy file by bouncing it to WAV and back. Check the source: a 3MB "WAV" of a four-minute song was probably not a real PCM master.

Phone memory is the honest reason this conversion exists. A folder of voice WAVs from a language class or interview day will fill iCloud before you notice. MP3 copies of those same talks fit. Keep one lossless folder on a disk you control, and put the MP3s on the device you actually carry.
