Why convert FLAC to MP3?

FLAC is a lossless audio format that stores a bit-perfect copy of the original PCM in far fewer bytes than WAV. Rips, Bandcamp purchases, and "download the FLAC" checkout buttons exist because you can transcode later without starting from a lossy file. Phones, most car stereos, and a lot of Bluetooth speakers still prefer MP3. The conversion is about portable device support, not about discovering that FLAC sounded bad.

A typical album FLAC is 200–400MB. The same album as 192kbps MP3 is often under 80MB. That gap is why people keep a lossless folder on a computer or NAS and put MP3s on the device in a bag. Which bitrate should you choose for FLAC?

You are encoding from a lossless source, so bitrate here actually chooses quality instead of inflating an already-lossy file. 192kbps is transparent for a lot of pop on earbuds. 256kbps and 320kbps are the conservative choices for dense mixes, classical, and anything you will later play on decent headphones.

128kbps is a speech setting. Putting a carefully ripped album through 128kbps wastes the point of owning FLAC. If storage is that tight, skip a few albums rather than crushing the ones you keep.

This encoder does not copy FLAC tags, artwork, or cue sheets into a perfect MP3 package. You get the sound. Re-tag the MP3s in a desktop library tool if the car stereo sorts by ID3. The FLAC remains the tagged archive.

Should you keep the original FLAC?

Yes. Converting FLAC to MP3 is lossy and irreversible. The MP3 is a listening copy. The FLAC is the file you re-encode from if you ever want 320kbps instead of 192kbps, or a future format that is not MP3. Deleting the FLAC locks you to this encode forever.

Does converting FLAC to MP3 lose quality?

Yes. FLAC is lossless; MP3 is not. At 320kbps the gap is small on consumer headphones. At 128kbps you will hear it on music. The lost data cannot be recovered from the MP3. Keep the FLAC and treat the MP3 as a portable derivative.

Should I use 192kbps or 320kbps?

192kbps is enough for most pop and speech on earbuds and is the default. 320kbps is the safer encode when the FLAC is an album you care about and the phone has room. Because the source is lossless, this choice actually changes quality, unlike transcoding an already-low AAC file.

Can I convert MP3 back to FLAC later?

You can wrap MP3 in a FLAC container, but you do not get lossless audio back. The file only looks like FLAC. A null test against the original rip will fail. That is why this page insists on keeping the real FLAC beside the MP3 you carry.

Will this work on iPhone or Android?
