Why convert MP3 to WAV?

WAV is a PCM audio format that stores uncompressed samples editors can cut, time-stretch, and process without decoding MP3 on every bounce. Premiere, Audacity, Pro Tools, and a long list of scientific tools still behave more predictably with WAV. The conversion is editing prep, not a quality upgrade.

People hit this page because a podcast guest sent MP3, a sample pack is MP3, or a voice memo was already transcoded and the DAW's MP3 decoder is being difficult. Expanding to WAV makes the timeline treat the clip as ordinary audio. It does not repair clipping, restore cymbals, or undo a 128kbps encode. If you needed lossless, you needed the WAV or FLAC from before the MP3 existed.

Does converting MP3 to WAV restore quality?

No. Decoding writes the samples the MP3 decoder emits. Missing highs from the original encode stay missing. The WAV is a convenient wrapper around that decode, not a reconstruction of a session master. A null test against a real PCM original will fail if one ever existed.

There is no bitrate control on this page because WAV PCM does not have an MP3-style bitrate. Bit depth is 16-bit. If your DAW wanted 24-bit, this still gives you 16-bit from an MP3 that never had 24-bit depth in the perceptual sense that matters.

Sample rate follows the MP3 (often 44.1 kHz). This tool does not resample to 48 kHz for video. If your timeline is 48 kHz, let the DAW resample once, or resample deliberately in the editor, rather than stacking mystery rates here.

When should you not convert MP3 to WAV?

When you only wanted to listen. MP3 already plays everywhere. Inflating it to WAV on a phone is how you run out of iCloud. Convert on the machine that will edit, right before the edit.

When you still have the real WAV or FLAC. Always prefer that. Decoding MP3 and calling it a master is how podcasts accumulate hiss across seasons.

When the MP3 is already inside a video. Extract WAV from the video instead of ripping a soundtrack to MP3 and then expanding it. Each extra hop is another chance to mismatch sample rates.

PCM stores every sample. A four-minute stereo 16-bit 44.1 kHz WAV is about 40MB. The MP3 stored a perceptual sketch of that audio in a few megabytes. Unpacking the sketch does not add information; it only stops using MP3 frames. The growth is expected.

What kind of WAV does this write?

Signed 16-bit little-endian PCM, the flavour Audacity, Premiere, and most DAWs open without asking. There is no 24-bit option on this page because the source is MP3. You get a predictable, boring WAV on purpose so editors stop arguing about the wrapper.

Will this work on iPhone or Android?

Yes, technically, in Safari or Chrome. The output WAV is large, so a long podcast can exhaust phone memory and then fill storage. Convert on the computer you edit on.

Can I convert several MP3 files at once?

Not currently. One decode at a time keeps RAM predictable, which matters because WAV output is bulky. Convert, download, then drop the next track. After the engine loads once, later MP3 files skip that first download wait. There is no batch mode.

Is it legal to convert MP3 to WAV?
