Why convert MOV to MP4?
MOV is a QuickTime container that Apple cameras, iPhone, and Final Cut still write by default. Windows Media Player, many Android galleries, LMS uploads, and a lot of web forms expect MP4. The mismatch is not about resolution. It is about which wrapper the other device was taught to open.
iPhone recordings are the usual trigger. You AirDrop a clip to a PC, attach it to an email, or drop it into a Windows editor, and the file either refuses to play or plays without audio. Changing the container to MP4 is the smallest fix that unblocks those apps. You are not trying to make the video smaller. You are trying to make it ordinary.
This conversion remuxes: it copies the existing video and audio streams into a new MP4 box and sets fast-start so the file can begin playing before it fully downloads. When the MOV already holds H.264 and AAC, the picture does not get a second generation of compression. File size stays almost the same because the frames were not rewritten.
HEVC (H.265) iPhone footage is the exception people miss. Remuxing HEVC into MP4 does not magically add an H.264 decoder on an old Windows PC. The container becomes MP4, but the codec is still HEVC. If the destination cannot play HEVC, you need a re-encode, not this remux. This page does the remux path on purpose so quality is left alone when the codecs already fit.

Does converting MOV to MP4 reduce quality?
Not on this path. The preset copies the video and audio bitstreams (`-c copy`) and writes `+faststart` so players can seek sooner. There is no bitrate slider because nothing is being re-encoded. If the output looks worse, the source already looked that way.
Remux can fail when the MOV uses a codec MP4 will not legally hold, or when there are data tracks, timecode, or odd audio layouts. In that case the conversion errors instead of silently degrading the picture. Re-encoding would get you a playable file at a quality cost; this page does not do that automatically.
Output size should land within a few percent of the input. A jump of tens of megabytes means something other than a remux happened, which this preset is not built to do. Keep the original MOV until you have confirmed the MP4 plays on the target device.
Will Windows and Android play the MP4?
If the iPhone recorded H.264 plus AAC, yes, almost everywhere. That is still common for older iOS, screen recordings, and plenty of third-party camera apps. Safari, Chrome, WhatsApp, and desktop editors all expect that pairing inside MP4.
If the iPhone recorded HEVC to save space, the MP4 may still fail on a PC that never installed HEVC extensions. Android support for HEVC is better than Windows, but not universal on cheap devices. Check the clip in QuickTime's inspector if you need to know the codec before you convert.
Sharing sites sometimes reject MOV even when they would accept the same H.264 inside MP4. That is a wrapper policy, not a quality policy. Remuxing is the correct move for those uploads as long as the codecs already match what the site allows.

Does converting MOV to MP4 reduce quality?
- No, when this tool can copy the streams. It remuxes instead of re-encoding, so the pixels and samples stay the same. HEVC inside a new MP4 wrapper is still HEVC. An old Windows PC that cannot decode HEVC still will not play that file after conversion.
Why won't my iPhone video play on Windows?
- iPhone writes QuickTime MOV. Many Windows apps only register MP4. Even after you change the wrapper, HEVC footage needs a HEVC decoder Windows does not ship for free on every build. H.264 MOV files usually play everywhere once they sit in MP4.

- Usually not by much. Remuxing copies the same compressed frames into a different box, so the byte count stays close. If you need a smaller file, compress the video as a separate step. Shrinking requires re-encoding, which this converter deliberately skips.
