How crop video works
Cropping is different from resizing. Resize keeps the whole picture and changes its pixel count; crop throws away the sides (or top and bottom) so the frame fits a new shape without black bars.
The crop is centred and uses the largest rectangle of the target ratio that fits in the source, rounded to even dimensions because H.264 requires them. A landscape 1920×1080 clip cropped to 9:16 becomes 606×1080.
Nothing is uploaded: the crop runs in WebAssembly on your device.
Everything runs on your device. See also Resize video.

Settings explained
Pick the ratio of the place you're posting to: 9:16 for Stories, Reels, TikTok and Shorts; 4:5 for an Instagram feed post; 1:1 for a square post.
If the subject sits off-centre, trim the clip to the part where it is centred, or crop in a desktop editor where you can drag the frame.
Choosing the right aspect ratio
Vertical 9:16 fills the whole phone screen and is what TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and Snapchat expect. Anything wider shows with bars or gets cropped by the app, often badly.
4:5 is the tallest shape Instagram allows in the main feed, so it takes up more of the screen than a square post. 1:1 is still the safest choice for carousels and for platforms that show posts in a grid.
16:9 is standard widescreen for laptops, TVs and most video players. Crop to it when a clip has black bars burned in or when you need to fit a presentation slide.
Because the crop is centred, frame your shot with the subject in the middle when you know it will become vertical later. Leave head-room above faces; a centre crop from landscape removes a lot of the sides but none of the height.
Frequently asked questions
Will cropping lower the resolution?
- The pixel count drops because the sides are removed, but the remaining pixels are not scaled, so detail is preserved.
Can I choose where to crop?
- This version always crops from the centre. Most talking-head and product shots are centred, which is why it is the default.
Does it keep the sound?
- Yes. Audio is re-encoded to AAC and kept in sync.
Crop or resize for TikTok?
- Crop if your clip is landscape and you want it to fill a vertical screen. Resize if it is already vertical and just too large.
Is my video uploaded?
- No, it is processed locally in your browser.
Is it free?
- Yes, with no watermark and no signup.
Can I crop out black bars?
- Yes: pick the ratio of the real picture, for example 16:9 for a widescreen clip with bars on top and bottom.
Will captions in the video be cut off?
- Text near the edges can be lost; burned-in captions near the bottom centre usually survive a vertical crop.
