Guide
How to send large videos on WhatsApp
WhatsApp compresses videos sent the normal way and limits how big they can be. For better quality, turn on HD when sending. For the original file, send it as a document, which allows up to 2 GB. If the file is still too big, or the recipient has a slow connection, compress it to 720p or split it into shorter parts first.
If a video is too long or too big, the video compressor can bring it down to a size WhatsApp accepts without the heavy blur of WhatsApp's own compression. It runs on your device, which suits private family videos.
How to prepare a large video for WhatsApp with Videozify
- Open the Videozify video compressor on your phone or computer.
- Select the video. On iPhone, choose it from Photos; on Android, from Gallery or Files.
- Pick the WhatsApp preset, which encodes 720p H.264 at a quality that survives WhatsApp's own processing.
- Press Compress and wait for the progress bar to finish.
- Save the result, then in WhatsApp tap the attach icon, choose the video and turn on HD before sending.
- For a long recording, use Split video to cut it into parts first, then send each part.
Why WhatsApp makes videos blurry
WhatsApp re-encodes videos sent from the gallery to save data for both people. Standard quality typically scales clips down to around 480p–720p at a low bitrate, which is why a sharp 4K video arrives soft and blocky. HD mode, added in 2023, keeps 720p and a higher bitrate, but it's still a re-encode.
A document is never re-encoded. WhatsApp sends the exact bytes, so quality is identical to the original, up to 2 GB per file. The trade-off is that the recipient sees a file icon instead of an inline player, and needs to tap to download and open it.
Three ways to send, compared
- Normal video: plays inline, heavily compressed, best for quick clips
- HD video: plays inline, better quality, larger download
- Document: original quality up to 2 GB, no inline preview, best for footage someone will edit or keep
How to send a video as a document
On Android: tap the paperclip, choose Document, browse to the video file (often in DCIM/Camera) and send.
On iPhone: Photos aren't listed under Document directly. Save the video to Files first (Share > Save to Files), then in WhatsApp tap +, Document, and pick it from Files.
On WhatsApp Desktop or Web: drag the file into the chat and choose to send it as a document, or use the attach menu.
When to compress first
Sending a 1.5 GB 4K video as a document works, but the recipient has to download 1.5 GB. On mobile data that's expensive and slow. Compressing to 720p with H.264 typically cuts a 4K file to a tenth of its size while still looking sharp on a phone, which is where most WhatsApp videos are watched.
Compressing yourself also gives a better result than WhatsApp's automatic compression, because you control the settings and only encode once. Each re-encode loses a little detail, and WhatsApp's encoder is tuned for speed rather than quality.
Splitting long videos
Status updates have a short per-clip length, and very long chat videos are inconvenient to download. The split video tool cuts a recording into 15, 30 or 60-second chunks, or into equal parts, without re-encoding, so there's no quality loss. Post the parts in order, and Status plays them back to back.
Save mobile data for your recipient
Think about where the video will be watched. Most WhatsApp videos are played on a phone screen around 6 inches across. On that screen, 720p looks as sharp as 4K, and a 720p H.264 file is 10 to 20 times smaller. A grandparent on a prepaid data plan will thank you for the smaller file.
If the recipient needs the original, for editing, printing stills or archiving, send it as a document or a cloud link so nothing is lost. If they just want to watch it, a well-compressed 720p video is kinder.
Recording settings that prevent the problem
The easiest fix is to record at a sensible resolution in the first place. On iPhone, go to Settings > Camera > Record Video and choose 1080p at 30 fps. Clips are about a quarter the size of 4K60 and still look great. Also consider Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible, which records H.264 instead of HEVC so every device can play it.
On Android, open the camera app's settings and choose 1080p or FHD as the video size. Samsung, Pixel and Xiaomi phones all offer this, and some have a "high-efficiency video" toggle that controls HEVC.
Group chats and broadcasts
In large groups every member downloads the video, so a smaller file saves data for everyone and reaches people faster on weak connections. For family groups across countries, where some people are on slow mobile networks, a compressed 720p clip is usually the most considerate choice.
Quality checklist before sending
- Trim the start and end
- Compress to 720p H.264 if the file is over 100 MB
- Turn on HD in the send screen
- Use a document for originals
- Split recordings longer than a few minutes
Native options on iPhone and Android
iPhone: Settings > Camera > Record Video lets you record at 1080p 30 fps instead of 4K, which makes every future video far smaller. The Photos app can trim clips (Edit, then drag the handles) but can't reduce resolution.
Android: most camera apps offer a resolution setting, and Google Photos can trim. Samsung's gallery editor can also change resolution when saving. Some phones include a built-in video compressor in the gallery share sheet.
Google Photos and iCloud both create share links. For really long videos, a link avoids WhatsApp's limits entirely.
Frequently asked questions
What's the WhatsApp video size limit?
- Videos sent as documents can be up to 2 GB. Videos sent the normal way are compressed and limited in length and size.
How do I stop WhatsApp reducing quality?
- Send the video as a document, or turn on HD when sending.
Why does my video look worse after sending?
- WhatsApp re-encodes normal videos to save data. Compressing it well yourself first, or sending a document, avoids this.
Can I send a 10-minute video?
- Yes, as a document, or after compressing it to 720p.
Is my video uploaded to Videozify?
- No. Compression happens on your device.
How do I post a long video to Status?
- Split it into short parts with the split video tool and post them in order.
Does WhatsApp compress documents?
- No. Documents are sent byte-for-byte as the original file.
Why is HD greyed out?
- HD only appears for videos above a certain resolution. Small videos are already sent at their own size.
Does WhatsApp keep my video private?
- Chats are end-to-end encrypted. Compressing with Videozify also happens on your device, so the video isn't uploaded anywhere else before you send it.
Can I send a video from a computer?
- Yes. WhatsApp Desktop and WhatsApp Web accept videos and documents, which is handy for files stored on a laptop.
Why is my video stuck on sending?
- Large files on a slow connection take a long time. Compress to 720p first, or switch to Wi-Fi.
