Why convert M4V to MP4?
M4V is an MPEG-4 video file Apple used for iTunes, iMovie, and some TV-app exports. Under the hood it is close to MP4. The extension and a few Apple-specific atoms are what trip Windows tools, LMS uploaders, and sites that whitelist .mp4 only. You are often one wrapper change away from a file that already would have played.
iMovie shares and HandBrake-to-Apple presets still write .m4v out of habit. Android galleries and many projectors do not list that suffix. Remuxing to MP4 with fast-start is the smallest fix. File size stays almost the same because the frames are copied.
Protected iTunes movies (FairPlay) will not decrypt in this tab. The conversion should fail rather than emit a black MP4. This page is for unprotected M4V: your own iMovie export, a file you encoded, or a store download that is actually DRM-free.
If the M4V is actually HEVC, remuxing does not add an H.264 decoder on an old Windows PC. The container becomes MP4; the codec is still HEVC. Check the inspector if the destination is a 2014 laptop.
If the MP4 is still too large to send, compress the video after remuxing. If the frame is larger than you need, resize the video instead of leaving 4K in a class upload.

M4V is an Apple MPEG-4 video file that iTunes and iMovie write, which many Windows apps and uploaders still reject in favour of .mp4.
Does converting M4V to MP4 reduce quality?
Not on a successful remux. The preset copies video and audio and sets fast-start. There is no bitrate slider because nothing is being re-encoded. If the output looks worse, the source already looked that way.
iTunes extras — chapter images, alternate audio — may be dropped. The MP4 is a playback copy, not a full iTunes package. Keep the M4V if those extras matter.
Output size should land within a few percent of the input. A jump of tens of megabytes means something other than a remux happened, which this preset is not built to do.
Is M4V just MP4 with a different name?
Often, yes, for DRM-free files. Apple used .m4v to mark TV episodes and iTunes video. Many players already treat them as MP4. The sites that do not are why this page exists: they filter on the extension.
DRM is the exception that is not “just a name.” FairPlay-wrapped M4V is encrypted. This converter cannot lawfully unwrap a store movie you are only licensed to play in Apple’s apps.
HandBrake users who ticked “Web optimized” and “MP4 file + M4V extension” can remux here and upload to a portal that wanted .mp4 all along.
iMovie’s share panel still offers M4V for historical iTunes reasons. If the destination is YouTube, a course LMS, or Windows Photos, change the letters here instead of re-encoding. If the destination is an iPhone that already plays the M4V, you do not need this page.

Does converting M4V to MP4 reduce quality?
- No, when this tool can copy the streams. It remuxes instead of re-encoding, so the pixels and samples stay the same. HEVC inside a new MP4 wrapper is still HEVC. An old PC that cannot decode HEVC still will not play that file after conversion.
Will this remove iTunes DRM?
- No. FairPlay-protected purchases will not decrypt here. The job should fail rather than write a useless file. Use this page for unprotected iMovie exports and DRM-free M4V, not to strip a store licence. This converter does not invent a FairPlay key.
Why do some sites reject M4V but accept MP4?
- They whitelist extensions. The codecs inside can be identical. Remuxing to .mp4 with fast-start is the practical fix for those uploaders. It is a wrapper policy, not a quality policy, as long as the codecs already match what the site allows.
Will this work on iPhone or Android?
- Yes. The conversion runs in Safari or Chrome. Large 4K M4V files can still exhaust mobile memory because the whole clip loads. If the tab reloads, convert a shorter take or use a computer. Nothing is uploaded in either case.
Can I convert several M4V files at once?
- Not currently. One file runs at a time so the browser does not keep two videos in memory. Convert, download, then drop the next M4V. The engine stays in the tab after the first load, so later remuxes skip the initial download wait.
Is it legal to convert M4V to MP4?
- Repackaging an iMovie export you made is fine. Changing the wrapper on a store file may still be limited by the store’s terms even when the file is “yours.” Videozify does not store files and cannot check those terms.
