How to save an IG Live video

How to save an IG Live video

You save an IG Live video after the broadcast ends— if the host enabled Save to archive, the replay appears on their profile for 30 days and you can screen record it; hosts can download their own replay from Live Archive. There is no viewer "Download Live" button during or after stream for most accounts. Videozify doesn't capture Instagram Live URLs— trim the MP4 after you record or receive a file.

Live vs replay: what's saveable when

PhaseViewer can save?Host can save?
During liveScreen record onlyYes (built-in record toggle)
Replay on profile (30 days)Screen recordDownload from archive
After replay expiresNoOnly if host saved earlier
Live without replay enabledNo replay existsHost may have local recording

Instagram Live is ephemeral by design unless the creator opts into replay or recording.

If you're the host: save your own Live

Before going Live:

  1. Tap Live → settings gear (or Start Live Video screen options).
  2. Enable Save to archive / Save Live to IGTV/Reels (wording changes— you want replay on profile + archive access).

After Live ends:

  1. Profile → menu → Archive → Live Archive.
  2. Open the session → ⋯ → Download or Save video (when shown).
  3. MP4 to camera roll or export via Download your information.

Hosts can also enable Record Live to device on some builds— saves locally during broadcast without waiting for replay processing.

If you're a viewer: save a replay

When the creator leaves replay up (default 30 days on profile):

  1. Open their profile → Live tab or replay badge on feed.
  2. Play replay full-screen.
  3. Screen record (iOS Control Center / Android Quick Settings).
  4. Trim start/end in Photos— replays include "Live" intro card.

No official viewer Download button on others' Live replays as of 2026.

During Live: same screen record approach— quality depends on your network and theirs. A 45-minute Live can produce a 1–2 GB screen recording at 1080p. Trim and compress before sharing— upload the file to Videozify, not an Instagram link.

When replay doesn't exist

Creator disabled replay or deleted it:

  • Viewers: nothing to save— you needed to record during Live.
  • Host: check Live Archive anyway— sometimes processing delays 10–30 minutes.

Collaborative Lives merge streams— replay saves host-side primarily.

Save Live to Reels (creator shortcut)

Instagram prompts hosts to Share to Reels after Live— creates a highlight clip, not full session. Viewers save that Reel via normal Share → Save video if downloads enabled— shorter than full Live.

Third-party "Instagram Live downloader" tools

They rarely work on Live CDN endpoints and frequently ask for login credentials. High ban risk. Screen recording the replay you can legally access is slower but honest.

Legal note

Live content may include guest faces, licensed music, and comments read aloud— saving to republish raises privacy and copyright issues. Personal offline notes for a workshop you paid for differs from reuploading someone's Q&A.

Troubleshooting

Replay not on profile — Host disabled save or ended Live abruptly before processing.

Screen record black screen — DRM rare on Live; usually old iOS bug— update Instagram and iOS.

Replay audio out of sync after record — Network lag during Live propagates to recording. Not fixable perfectly— re-watch on Wi-Fi.

Host Download missing in archive — Account type restriction or Live older than retention policy. Data export may still have it if requested quickly.

File gigantic — Hour-long Live screen record: trim dead sections, then compress uploaded MP4.

Conclusion

Hosts: enable archive + download from Live Archive. Viewers: screen record the replay while it's up, then trim. No reliable third-party Live downloaders.

Long recording to share? Trim and compress the MP4 you exported— file upload only.

Frequently asked questions
