Most people searching how can you save a video on instagram want a file in their phone gallery. That's only guaranteed for content you posted—or when Instagram shows an explicit save-to-device option, which is rare on others' Reels.
Method 1: Bookmark a video (Save to Collections)
Works on any public post where saving isn't disabled.
- Open the Reel, feed video, or IGTV clip.
- Tap the bookmark icon (ribbon shape) below the video.
- Optional: tap Save to collection and pick or create a folder ("Recipes," "Workout," etc.).
- Find saved items under your profile → Saved.
What you get: quick access inside Instagram. What you don't get: an MP4 in Files or Photos. If the creator deletes the post, your bookmark breaks.

Method 2: Save your own video to camera roll
If you published the Reel or post:
- Open the video on your profile.
- Tap ⋯ (More options).
- Look for Save to device, Download, or Save video—label varies by region and app version.
- Check Photos or Gallery.
Not showing? Your video might be a draft, a collab where you're not the owner, or a remix with licensing limits. Download Your Information (Method 4) catches most of your uploads.
Method 3: Screen recording (iPhone and Android)
When no download button exists and you have permission to keep a personal copy:
iPhone (iOS 17+):
- Add Screen Recording to Control Center in Settings.
- Open the Instagram video full-screen.
- Swipe down → tap record → play the video → stop.
- Trim the start/end in Photos if you captured the home bar.
Android:
- Use built-in screen recorder (Samsung, Pixel) or swipe-down quick settings.
- Play the video with sound on if you need audio.
- Crop in Google Photos afterward.
Expect 720p-ish output even if the source looked sharper. File size: roughly 3–8 MB per minute at default settings.
Method 4: Download your information (your videos only)
Meta's official export for Instagram:
- Profile → ☰ → Settings and privacy → Your activity.
- Download your information (or Accounts Center → Your information and permissions).
- Select Some of your information → check Posts and Reels.
- Choose JSON or HTML, High quality, date range All time.
- Request download and wait for the email link.
Videos appear as MP4s inside the ZIP—messy folder names, but full files. A creator account with 200 Reels might produce a 5–15 GB archive.
What about third-party Instagram downloaders?
Paste-URL sites and "Reels saver" apps promise one-tap MP4s. Problems:
- Violate Instagram's Terms of Use for content you don't own.
- Frequently serve pop-up ads, fake buttons, or credential phishing.
