How to download Instagram photos
You download Instagram photos by saving your own posts to your device, bookmarking others' images inside the app, or exporting your account through Meta's Download your information tool. How to download instagram photos sounds like one action. It's really three different problems depending on who owns the image.
Your photos: save to device
If you posted it, you have the most options.
- Open the post on your profile grid.
- Tap ⋯ → Save to device or Download (availability varies).
- Check Photos / Gallery.
Carousel posts: Instagram may save only the current slide. Swipe to each image and save individually, or use the bulk export below.
Archived posts: Unarchive first (Profile → ☰ → Archive), then save.
Your photos: Download your information
For hundreds of images at once:
- Settings and privacy → Your activity → Download your information.
- Select Posts (photos ride with posts).
- All time, High quality, HTML or JSON.
- Submit, wait for email, download ZIP.
Inside the archive, photos appear as JPG files—often 1080px wide because that's Instagram's standard upload width. A 500-post account might yield a 2–6 GB ZIP depending on carousels and videos mixed in.
Others' photos: bookmark (not a file download)
- Open the post.
- Tap the bookmark icon.
- Access later via Profile → Saved.
This saves the post reference inside Instagram—not a standalone image file. Creator deletes the post? Gone from Saved too.
Others' photos: screenshot (practical fallback)
When you need a reference image and there's no official download:
- iPhone: Side button + volume up.
- Android: Power + volume down (varies by manufacturer).
Crop out the UI in Photos. Resolution matches your screen—on a 6.1" iPhone, expect roughly 1170×2532 pixels captured, but the image portion is smaller after crop.
Instagram doesn't notify users about screenshots of feed posts (unlike some vanish-mode DM content—different rules).
Desktop browser: limited help
instagram.com lets you view posts, but right-click save is often blocked or grabs a low-res preview. Logged-in desktop is fine for browsing; mobile app or data export beats desktop for saving your own files.
Third-party "Instagram photo downloaders"
Websites asking for a post URL or your login:
- Often illegal for copyrighted images you don't own.
- Top results change monthly—many are ad farms.
- Login-with-Instagram flows are phishing. Full stop.
