How to download an Instagram video
You download an Instagram video you created through Save to device on the post or through Meta's Download your information export. Downloading someone else's Reel without permission isn't supported officially—and Videozify doesn't offer a paste-URL Instagram downloader. This guide focuses on getting a real MP4 file for your Reels, feed videos, and collabs where you're the primary author.

Reels vs feed video vs IGTV-style posts
Instagram treats them similarly for export, but filenames and folders in a data ZIP differ.
| Type | Length | Save to device | In data export |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reel | Up to 90 sec (3 min for some) | Usually yes (your post) | Under Reels folder |
| Feed video | Any | Usually yes | Under posts/media |
| Story (archived) | 15 sec/slide | If still in archive | Sometimes in stories export |
How to download an instagram video for a trending Reel you didn't make? Instagram won't give you a button. Bookmark it or ask the creator—don't trust random downloader sites.
Quick download: one Reel to your phone
- Open your profile → Reels tab.
- Tap the Reel.
- ⋯ → Save to device (or Download).
- Check camera roll—file appears as MP4.
Takes under 10 seconds on Wi-Fi. A 45-second dance Reel might be 22 MB at default Instagram compression.
Collab posts: If you co-authored, the original uploader's account may control save rights. Open from your profile; if save is grayed out, try the export tool.
Full library: Download your information
One Reel is Method 1. Fifty Reels is this:
- Settings and privacy → Your activity → Download your information.
- Select Reels (add Posts if feed videos matter).
- All time, High quality.
- Submit request.
Meta emails a link—often 6–48 hours later. Download the ZIP to a computer with free disk space, then search for .mp4 files.
When Save to device fails
| Error / behavior | Fix |
|---|---|
| Option missing | Use data export; may be music-licensed content |
| Saved file won't play | Re-download; file may have corrupted mid-save |
| Black screen in export | DRM on licensed audio—Instagram strips or blocks |
| Only audio saved | You grabbed a voice note, not a video—re-open post |
Licensed trending audio sometimes prevents export even on your own Reel. Instagram's deal with labels trumps your save button. Re-record without copyrighted audio if you need a clean file.
Others' videos: what's realistic
- Bookmark: In-app only.
- Screen record: Personal reference with permission.
- Third-party downloader: Terms violation + security risk.
Videozify won't scrape Reels URLs. Our video trimmer accepts an MP4 you legally possess—nothing pulled from instagram.com servers by us.
Edit after you download
Common next steps once the MP4 is local:
- Trim cold open: Upload to video trimmer, cut first 2 seconds of dead air.
- Compress for upload elsewhere: Video compressor if TikTok or email rejects the size.
- Resize aspect ratio: Resize video if you need 16:9 from a 9:16 export.
All browser-based. File must already be on your device—we don't fetch Instagram links.
Reels with trending audio: export gotchas
Trending songs often carry label restrictions. Symptoms:
- Save to device grayed out even on your Reel
- Export succeeds but audio is silent
- Video plays in Instagram but exported MP4 won't open in some editors
Fixes: re-upload with royalty-free audio from Instagram's library, keep the original camera file on your phone, or screen-record as a last resort (quality hit). No ethical third-party tool bypasses music licensing—despite what ads claim.
Compare save paths for one Reel
| Path | Time | Quality | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Save to device | <1 min | Instagram compression | Need file now |
| Data export | Hours–days | Same compression | Backing up everything |
| Screen record | 1–2 min | Lower | Licensed audio blocks export |
Pick one path per goal. I use Save to device for today's post and quarterly export for disaster recovery.
Conclusion
Your Reel: Save to device or bulk Download your information. Someone else's: no official MP4—don't use shady downloaders.
