How to download a video from Facebook
You can download a video from Facebook if the uploader enabled Save video, by screen-recording on your phone or PC, or by exporting your own posts through Download your information. Facebook does not offer a universal "download any public video" button, and third-party downloader sites carry real privacy risks. Videozify does not download Facebook videos—we handle YouTube and local file conversion—but this guide covers every honest path to get a clip off the platform and what to do with the file afterward.
What Facebook actually lets you do
Before hunting for workarounds, check whether the built-in option is already there.

The Save video option is controlled by the person who posted. If you don't see it, Facebook isn't blocking you—the creator turned it off or the content type doesn't support it.
Method 1: Save video inside the Facebook app (official)
This is the cleanest path when it's available.
- Open the video in the Facebook or Facebook Lite app (or facebook.com in a browser).
- Tap the ⋯ menu on the post (top right on mobile, below the video on desktop).
- Look for Save video. If it's missing, skip to Method 2.
- Tap Save video. Facebook stores it under Saved in the menu (hamburger icon → Saved → Saved videos).
What you get: playback inside Facebook when you're offline (within app limits), not necessarily an MP4 in your Photos app. On some Android builds, Saved videos can be shared out; on iPhone, you often need another step.
To get it on your camera roll (when Save worked): Open the saved video → Share → Save video if iOS shows that option, or share to Files on Android. If only "Copy link" appears, the file stays locked in Facebook's viewer.
Method 2: Screen recording (no third-party site)
When Save video isn't there, screen recording is the workaround I use for a family clip someone shared in a private group—content I'm allowed to keep, not random reposts.
iPhone (iOS 17/18):
- Add Screen Recording to Control Center (Settings → Control Center).
- Open the Facebook video and start playback.
- Swipe down → tap Record → play the full clip → stop recording.
- Open Photos → edit the recording to trim dead air at the start and end.
Android: Use the built-in screen recorder in Quick Settings, or Samsung's Game Tools overlay.
Windows/Mac: Win+G (Xbox Game Bar) or QuickTime New Screen Recording on Mac.
Quality reality check: A 3-minute 1080p screen capture can land at 80–150 MB with slight compression loss. Audio comes through if the video isn't muted. Don't expect broadcast quality.
Method 3: Download your own videos (official export)
For videos you uploaded:
- Go to Settings & privacy → Settings → Your Facebook information → Download your information.
- Select Videos (or full account archive).
- Choose HTML or JSON, date range, and Create file.
- Facebook emails a link when the zip is ready—often hours for large accounts.
This is the only Facebook-sanctioned way to get original MP4 files for your own uploads. Creators archiving a page should use Meta Business Suite or Creator Studio where download options still exist for owned content.
Third-party Facebook downloaders: read this first
Search results push sites that paste a Facebook URL and return an MP4. I don't recommend them as a first choice.
Risks:
- Login phishing — pages that ask you to sign into Facebook through their form
- Malware — fake "codec" or browser extension installs
- Data harvesting — your links, IP, and device fingerprint sold to ad networks
- Broken downloads — Facebook changes URLs constantly; sites stop working overnight

After you have an MP4 file
Once the video is on your device—screen recording, export, or a file someone sent you—Videozify can help with format work, not fetching from Facebook:

Troubleshooting
No Save video option — Creator disabled it, or it's a Reel/Watch format. Screen record or ask the poster to send the file directly.
Video plays but export is black screen — Some DRM-protected or embedded players block capture. Try desktop browser full-screen recording, or request the original file.
Saved video won't leave the app — Facebook keeps some clips in-app only. Screen recording is the fallback.
Download your information stuck on "pending" — Large accounts take 24–48 hours. Check spam for the Meta email.
Legal and etiquette
Downloading someone else's video without permission can violate copyright and Facebook's Terms of Service. Save for personal offline viewing of content you're allowed to access—not for re-uploading, selling, or stripping watermarks from news footage. When in doubt, message the creator and ask.
