A WMA to MP3 converter transcodes Windows Media audio into an MP3 that Mac, iPhone, and most cars will play. Videozify transcodes the file. Drop the file, pick a bitrate, and download an MP3 without asking anyone to install Windows Media Player.

How to convert WMA to MP3

  1. Drop your WMA file onto the box above, or click Browse to choose it from disk.
  2. Choose an MP3 bitrate — 192kbps is the default and suits most listening.
  3. Press Convert and wait until the progress bar reaches one hundred percent.
  4. Download the MP3 when it appears; the file saves only to this device.

Why convert WMA to MP3?

WMA is a Windows Media audio format that Microsoft bundled with Media Player, ripped CDs to by default in the 2000s, and used for PlaysForSure devices. Macs never treated it as native. iPhone still does not. A file that plays on the office PC is a brick on the laptop in the other room.

This is a transcode, not a rename. WMA (often WMA9 / wmav2) is not MP3. Copying the extension produces a file that still fails in Music.app. The preset decodes WMA and writes libmp3lame at your chosen bitrate.

DRM-wrapped WMA from old music stores will not decode here. Unprotected rips and voice notes generally will. If the job fails immediately, the file may be protected or using a codec this wasm build cannot read.

Use this when a Windows rip needs to go on an iPhone, or when a training soundtrack was exported as WMA beside a WMV. If the file is video, use WMV to MP4 or WMV to MP3 instead of this audio-only page.

If the WMA includes long silence at both ends, trim the audio after converting. If a Windows rip plays too quietly on iPhone, boost the volume on the MP3 copy.

WMA is a Windows Media audio format that Microsoft built for Windows Media Player, which Mac and iPhone still will not play natively.

Which bitrate should you choose for WMA?

Match the source when you can guess it. Speech WMA can take 128kbps MP3. Music rips around 192kbps WMA can take 192kbps MP3 as the default. 320kbps only inflates a low-rate voice note.

You will not hear more detail than the WMA contained. Two lossy codecs in a row each throw away overlapping data. If Windows already plays it and the destination also does, skip this conversion.

Tags may not copy perfectly. Name the MP3 for the car stereo that sorts by filename.

Why won't my Mac play a WMA file?

Apple never shipped Windows Media audio in Music the way Windows shipped it in Media Player. Third-party players can decode WMA. The Music app, Mail preview, and iPhone usually will not. Colleagues who “just double-click” on a Mac see an error, not a song.

iPhone is stricter. There is no WMA decoder in iOS music. AirDropping the WMA does nothing useful. AirDropping an MP3 does. That is the product reason for this page.

WMA Lossless exists and is rarer. If ffmpeg reads it, you still get a lossy MP3 out — keep the lossless original if that is what you have.

Office training packs from the 2000s shipped WMA because Windows Media Player was already on the PC. Those packs still circulate as zip files on shared drives. Transcoding the soundtrack to MP3 is how a Mac-only team actually hears the lecture without installing a codec pack they should not trust.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting WMA to MP3 lose quality?

A little. Both formats are usually lossy, so transcoding stacks two perceptual models. Speech stays usable at 128–192kbps. Music loses some air. Keep the WMA if Windows already plays it and you still have that PC. MP3 is the copy for Mac and iPhone.

Will this remove Windows Media DRM?

No. Protected PlaysForSure or subscription files will not decrypt here. The job should fail rather than write silence. Use this page for unprotected rips and recordings, not to strip a store licence. This tab does not invent a DRM key.

Is WMA the same as WMV?

No. WMA is audio. WMV is video. This page wants .wma. If your file is a Windows video, use WMV to MP4 to keep the picture or WMV to MP3 to extract the soundtrack. Renaming .wmv to .wma will not make this dropzone happy.

Will this work on iPhone or Android?

Yes. Safari and Chrome run the engine. Music WMA files are usually small. A long audiobook can still stress RAM. If the tab reloads, convert on a computer..

Can I convert several WMA files at once?

Not currently. One file at a time keeps memory use predictable. Convert, download, then drop the next track. After the engine loads once, later files skip that download. A ripped album folder is still one drop each; there is no batch zip.

Is it legal to convert WMA to MP3?

Transcoding a CD rip you made or a recording you have rights to use is normally fine. Transcoding a store WMA whose licence forbids other formats may still be restricted. Videozify does not store files and cannot check those terms.
