Convert a 3GP video file to MP3 audio. This tool extracts the first audio track from your 3GP and encodes it to MP3 at your chosen bitrate. Works fully in your browser—your file never leaves your device.

How to convert 3GP to MP3

  1. Drop your 3GP file onto the page or click Browse to select it from your device.
  2. Choose your desired MP3 bitrate (128, 192, 256, or 320 kbps; 192 kbps is default).
  3. Click Convert and wait for the progress bar to finish.
  4. Download the MP3 audio file to your device when the conversion completes.

Why convert 3GP to MP3?

3GP was a common video format for early mobile phones, especially before smartphones. If you have old recordings from a flip phone or early Android, they are likely in 3GP. These files bundle video and audio in a compact way, but the sound can be difficult to play or extract on modern devices. MP3 is a universal audio format that every phone, computer, car, or music player can handle.

Converting 3GP to MP3 makes it easy to listen to old voice memos, ringtones, or music videos without worrying about video compatibility. MP3 is supported by nearly every device and app. You can archive, edit, or share the sound without carrying obsolete video files.

A typical 3GP video is low resolution and often encoded at a low audio bitrate, sometimes as low as 64 kbps. When you extract the audio and save as MP3, you get a pure audio file. For a 4-minute 3GP video, the resulting MP3 at 192 kbps is about 5–6 MB. The original 3GP file might be anywhere from 4 MB (very compressed) to 20 MB (higher quality video), so the audio-only MP3 is usually smaller, but not always if the 3GP contained only audio.

If you want to save space, share just the sound, or make an old mobile recording easier to play, converting to MP3 is a solid step. Choose a bitrate that matches the original quality—extracting at 320 kbps will not magically improve a 64 kbps source. For most mobile 3GP recordings, 128 or 192 kbps is plenty.

Want to split the MP3 or trim silence after extraction? Try the audio trimmer, or extract just the audio from other video types with the extract audio tool.

3GP is a mobile video file format from the early 2000s, used by phones to save both video and audio in a small file. MP3 is a pure audio format supported everywhere.

Does converting 3GP to MP3 reduce quality?

The tool extracts audio from the 3GP file and encodes it as MP3 using the LAME encoder. You pick the MP3 bitrate—128, 192, 256, or 320 kbps. The default is 192 kbps, which is a good balance for most voice or music. If the audio in your 3GP was already low quality (like AMR-NB at 12–24 kbps), converting to a higher MP3 bitrate won't improve it. The process cannot recover detail that isn't in the original.

If you select a much lower bitrate than the original, you may lose some clarity. For most old phone recordings, 128 kbps is enough for speech, but 192 kbps is safer for music. The tool only extracts the first audio track—if your 3GP has multiple, only the main one is kept.

No video is kept in the MP3. This is a one-way process: you cannot get the video frames back from the MP3. Always keep your original 3GP if you might need the video later.

When should you NOT convert 3GP to MP3?

If you want to keep the video, do not convert to MP3—MP3 only stores audio. If your 3GP is a video memory you want to re-watch, consider converting to MP4 instead, which preserves both video and audio in a modern format.

If your 3GP already contains only audio (rare, but possible), converting to MP3 is fine, but you may want to check the original codec and bitrate. For archival or editing, FLAC or WAV can preserve more detail, but the original 3GP audio is usually so compressed that MP3 is enough.

If you plan to edit the audio heavily (for podcasts or music production), extracting as WAV or FLAC may be better, but for most uses—listening, sharing, ringtones—MP3 is the practical choice.

Frequently asked questions

Who still has 3GP files?

People who used early mobile phones, especially before smartphones, often have 3GP files. These could be old video messages, ringtones, or voice recordings. Some security cameras and legacy devices also export in 3GP. Modern phones rarely use 3GP, but you might find it in old SD cards, backups, or email attachments from 2005–2013.

Will the MP3 sound better than the 3GP?

No. The MP3 will sound as good as the original audio in the 3GP, but not better. If the 3GP audio is low-bitrate or compressed (which is common), converting to a high bitrate MP3 will not restore quality. The best you can do is match or slightly exceed the original bitrate to avoid extra loss.

How much space will I save?

A 4-minute 3GP video might be 4–20 MB depending on quality. Extracting just the audio to MP3 at 192 kbps typically results in a 5–6 MB file. If the video in the 3GP was the main contributor to size, you'll save space. If the 3GP was mostly audio, the MP3 may be about the same size.

Can I do this with built-in apps?

Most built-in apps do not extract audio from 3GP. Windows Media Player and QuickTime can play some 3GP files, but not save audio separately. VLC can convert 3GP to MP3, but the process is less direct. Audacity can import some 3GPs, but may need plugins. Videozify does it all in your browser with no install.

What bitrate should I pick for MP3?

Use 128 kbps for voice memos or speech—this is more than enough for most mobile recordings. For music, 192 kbps is a good default. 256 or 320 kbps is only useful if the source was high quality, which is rare for 3GP. Picking a higher bitrate than the original won't add detail.

Does this work on my phone?

Yes. The converter runs in Chrome, Safari, or Firefox on Android and iOS. Everything happens in your browser—no files are uploaded. For large files, older phones may run out of memory. Try a shorter file or use a computer if you run into issues.

Can I batch convert multiple 3GP files?

Not at once. The tool processes one file at a time to avoid browser memory problems. Convert, download, then start the next. For large batches, desktop tools like VLC or Audacity may be more efficient, but require more setup.

Is it legal to convert 3GP to MP3?

If the 3GP files are your own recordings or you have permission, yes. Converting does not change the legal status of any material. Videozify does not store your files or check copyright. Always respect the rights of original creators.
